Trying to succeed in the world sucks ass. Even when I’m enjoying myself, it still sucks ass. That’s because I work for the man. Most of us work for the man. The man may help us to think that we’re not working for the man, but chances are, you’re still working for the man. You ever been to that relative’s house who wants to feed you, and they feed you so much that you can barely eat anymore? Then they offer you a slice of pie? Now, you can’t turn that pie down for two very good reasons. 1. It’s pie. Pie is delicious and you’d be a fool not to eat a piece of pie if someone gave it to you. 2. You’re in someone else’s house and you don’t want to come off as ungrateful for their hospitality. That’s what the man does. Just when you think you’re finally done, that you can go up to your dusty cobweb-filled room at your great aunt Mildred’s house, the man brings out the fucking pie. And with all the sugar and fat, and you, having just eaten a huge meal and traveled a great distance and all you wanna do [...]

If New York has played a definitive role in the evolution of art, so too has the artistic community transformed the city. In search for cheap studio space in one of the world’s most expensive metropolises, artists have historically flocked to Gotham’s most underdeveloped areas. Artists colonized the ghettos south of 14th Street in the last century, setting in motion a process of gentrification that would ironically displace them. Priced out of Manhattan, artists relocated to Brooklyn, pushing their way further and further east in the borough on their quest for an affordable pied-à-terre. Bushwick is the most notable recent stop on that migration. Like so many other artist hubs of the past, Bushwick has a turbulent history. Hit especially hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs and the New York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s, Bushwick underwent a dramatic economic decline that quickly plunged the majority of its households below the poverty line. During the infamous city blackout of 1977, the neighborhood erupted in race riots, looting, and the worst fires to blaze in the entire city, dealing a final blow to the once bustling, family-oriented community. Within a few short years, the heroin and crack trade on [...]

While sitting at the corner grocery, enjoying a vitamin water and a good conversation with a friend, our discussion found its way to Eric Bogosian. It came as a bit of a surprise to learn that Mr. Bogosian currently plays the police chief on Law and Order: CI. You see, the Bogosian that I am familiar with is the one who performed off-off-off Broadway through the late 80′s and 90′s, and is one of the premier solo-performers of our time, wearing his signature white shirt with too-tight black jeans, performing a series of vignettes highlighting the “American Male,” and rumored to pop a couple of viagra before each show in an effort to get the juices flowing and to create one hell of a roller coaster ride for himself and his audiences. Like this. So I watched some of this new Bogosian, the Bogosian that strives for law and order every Sunday night at 9, and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. However, we should be aware that there are two markedly different performances going on between the old and the new Bogosian, and this brings me back to what I wrote about last week, and back to Jerzy Grotowski. Grotowski’s method [...]
