“History repeats itself… the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” Karl Marx, from the 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte Any yokel can repeat the past and call it a fresh start or a new beginning but as Marx points out, repetition will eventually reveal itself as repetition, a seemingly endless cycle of reperforming our own and our collective histories. Regardless of the attempts of the would be creator he inevitably falls short unless he manages a breaking with/of the past. We are all capable of this breaking. As Hannah Arendt points out, our ability to create something new, something truly new is what marks us as human beings. It marks us as creatures able to perform miracles. For what is bringing something new into the world if not a miracle? Photo Credit: uncyclomedia commons

Drip.

In the darkness, it's all I could hear – the sound of liquid slowly dripping into a puddle of itself. Drip. Drip. The smell of plants and herbs wrapped around me like a cloak, making my skin tingle all over. It hugged me tight, then whispered into my ear, “Follow me out of here, and all will be well.”

“We already had this conversation, remember?” I said. “So I know that you're lying. But I'm going to follow you anyway, because I need to come back to life. I have things to do.”

Many things around us can trigger memories. For some of you it will be a song, the sound of someone’s voice or a familiar perfume. My main sensory trigger is usually…come on, one guess. The smell and taste of food. Ahh, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. There are dishes that bring me back to the happy years of childhood when I could go a whole summer surviving on grilled mozzarella- pepperoni sandwiches, and Ovaltine. Some dishes I am still trying to forget, Thanksgiving leftover smoosh, for example, brings me back to play dates where I would pray my mom could pick me up before dinner was served (sorry Lisa, you know I love you). No matter how much time goes by or how hard we try to forget, these triggers will always bring us back. When I’m away and feeling homesick I always know exactly what to cook to bring me into to my mom’s kitchen, my happy place. Every stage of preparing the meal brings a new memory of comfort and joy. It transports me directly to elementary school days when I would walk through the front door after school or soccer and within an instant I would [...]

1 part gin 3 parts juice (grapefruit) Preparation: Pour ingredients into salt-rimmed crunk cup filled with ice. Then do something Snoop Dogg would do — like, go out and get endorsed by someone. Look at this! Snoop Dogg just got picked up by Symantec to be the face of their new “Hack is Wack” initiative. A little on the edgy side for Symantec, a little on the bitch side for Snoop. The marketing campaign is some sort of video submission contest and I’m probably going to sit this one out. I would say he’s better than that, but I think it’s probably a step up from his Orbit campaign. All in all, The Boss Dogg is kind of the man. Although he was originally known for his rap skills, the guy has like twice as many endorsements as albums and about three or times as film appearances. I’m not even including television appearances. Some people call him a sell out and think he is forgetting who he was; I just think he likes the attention and makings the moneys. Apparently, he was also an actual P.I.M.P., so he says. He’s been in jail for all sorts of things and was [...]

this song, which I recorded and mixed is from a band called Dorjeman of which I am a member. mic night is an event that happened in Israeli politics. The translation might sound a bit weird, as I used google translate to translate the wikipedia.il page… so i’m sorry if it sounds strange. The short version: in the middle of a right-winged party convention one official shouted against the prime minister : “Those in favor of eliminating terrorism, raise your hand!” which is kind of funny. the chorus is: “sing with us, together we will win against the terrorism” and in the verses, we talk about how cool are we. Now, the long version: Night of the microphones was the name given by the media to the Likud Party Central Committee meeting on 12 February 1990 in which Ariel Sharon announced his resignation from the position of Minister of Industry and Trade. At the time, the Prime Minister was Yitzhak Shamir. At Sharon’s resignation, Sharon tried to convince the Keneset (Israel’s congress) that he would make a better leader. When Shamir had Sharon’s microphone turned off, Sharon ripped the mic out of Shamir’s hands and shouted out “Who wants to [...]

In recognition of this week’s theme — “forgetting” — it would have been convenient had I resorted to contriving a post in list form because I had forgotten about this week’s deadline. But, the truth of the matter is that (1) I read kwilk’s post this week; (2) I liked it; (3) I’m impressionable; and (4) I ultimately decided to steal the idea. Here are two items of interest that we could hardly help but forget, thanks to our rapacious, small-minded, muckracking, bickering, tit-for-tat, two-party media culture that would give our country’s founders a start. (On account of revulsion or delight, depending on whom you ask.) 1. Yesterday Is So Far Away: In my lifetime, there has been nearly constant changeover between the parties that control the Presidency, the House and the Senate. In the year I was born, 1981, there was a Republican in the White House, a Republican-controlled Senate and a Democratic House. But, that changed by the time I was 6, when, in 1987, Democrats took over the Senate. It changed again 6 years later, in 1993, when we put a Democrat in the White House. By 1995, Republicans controlled the House and Senate. But, in 2001, [...]

“Memory is shaped by forgetting just as the shore is shaped by the sea” Marc Augé How do you perform your memories? Do you wear them on your sleeves? Can I read your memories in the same way that I read your personality? The way you wear your hair or where you choose to place your tattoos? Is it on your All Stars, or in the way you sashay? Our memories flow from everything we do and say. Take for example the time I learned how to walk. I was 11 years old and in middle school when a couple of boys slapped the books out of my hand, knocked me over, and told me I walked like a girl. I thought that maybe if I learned how to walk like a boy I might not have such a hard time and so began my 6th grade reconnaissance mission: operation “walk like a man.” I found nooks and crevices around campus to hide in while others walked to class or the cafeteria. I waited and took notes. Copious notes. When I got home I snuck out to the alley ways around our house and practiced, sometimes for hours, until the [...]
