welcome back, jonny quest

This past Sunday I moved to Chicago. Or, I moved some garbage bags of clothes and my dog to Chicago. Luckily, some college buddies have an open room, so my garbage bags and dog have a place to stay. And me.

(I consequently forgot to write my column this week on time.)

But when you’re waiting to hear about the resumes you’ve sent out, most of your shit is still in Michigan, and your buddies are at work (and the 2nd story apartment has no A/C), it’s easy to fall into a queasy, semi-homesick malaise.

So what do you do?

Or, since this is my column, what did I do?

I fixed a PB & J, filled a glass of 2% milk, and cranked the internet dial over to a home-made documentary about Jonny Quest, the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon adventure series from 1964. The show only lasted for one season, but over 26 episodes, Jonny and his makeshift family got into scrapes from the Andes to Hong Kong.

Spies, futuristic machines, frogmen, yetis, island compounds, evil scientists, invisible monsters, exotic locales–as a kid I loved loved this show when Cartoon Network started airing it. So when I stumbled across a documentary about Jonny Quest, I settled onto my new sticky Chicago couch and watched it clip by YouTube clip (instead of writing this column, which, unless you’ve already forgotten, was not on my mind).

The documentary, simply titled Quest, was apparently made by a couple of fans for another Quest-lover’s 50th birthday party. Which is pretty cool.  Even cooler is that Quest is a slick two-and-a-half hour movie that covers the creation of the show, its various travails, the inspirations behind the characters, music, etcetera, etcetera–so much delicious Jonny Quest information.

But my favorite part of Quest is that the people who made it have remained anonymous despite a totally different Quest aficionado, Chris Webber, getting their permission to release it on the internet. For free. Available on YouTube or download-able through Webber’s blog.

So, basically there’s a 2.5 hour awesome Jonny Quest documentary-as-birthday present floating around on the web that brightened my A/C-less day. And now you can watch it too.

Until next week, when I’ll be less forgetful…
