My Last Block Party

The big football game is tomorrow. Block parties are springing up everywhere. All the people you know, and hopefully a good handful of new faces, will be meeting up in a back yard or empty patch of grass/pavement. When planned correctly everyone should be encouraged to bring some type of food or drink.

Colin Firth A Single Man

Its not a secret that designers are often inspired by what they see on the big screen and its not exactly hush-hush that feature films name-drop designers as if it were part of the script. Breakfast at Tiffany’s has patented the “little black dress” and the Sex and the City movies were essentially a glorified fashion show but rarely has a designer stepped away from the studio and swapped his sketchpad for a director’s chair. Tom Ford basically came out the woodwork with his feature film, A Single Man, in late 2009.  The film, which was five years in the making according to Ford, is based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel similarly titled A Single Man, a story about a gay professor living in Southern California in 1962. Although the story line is intriguing enough, Ford did not let his expertise go to waste. The movie is aesthetically stunning with Ford’s eye for detail and impeccable sense of style. Everything from the masterfully crafted suits to the architecture to the hair and make up is overwhelmingly gorgeous. His creative contributions really enhance everything in the film so even if the storyline was shit, it wouldn’t matter to me because everything was

go tell it on the mountain\/\/the memory is born

sunrise massada

There is a small mountain in the Jordan Rift Valley called Massada. It’s hard to determine when something stops being a hill and starts being a mountain. I think the best we can do is climb the thing and see how we feel once we get to the top. Did we get our ass kicked on the climb, or was it more of an enjoyable afternoon stroll in an upwardly direction? Massada will kick your ass. A little over a month ago I began climbing Massada just about every day. You can read about why here, if you’re so inclined. The first time I went up it was about 9am, and just over 100 degrees. When I got to the top I looked over the valley and the dead sea below. In the vicinity I had one of the highest views over the lowest place on earth. It is absolutely breathtaking. But that’s not why people come to Massada, or at least not the only reason. Massada is what Pierre Nora would describe as a milieu de memoire, a site of memory. For Nora we have sites that store our national and personal memories. These sites (memorials, battlefields, national historic

consume for the job you want\/\/a movie about work

Hey ya’ll, I just finished writing exams last week, which means my summer has finally, really arrived, but it’s also left me a little brain dead (the exams, not the arrival of summer. I think). I’ve been coping with long bike rides and movies from the 1990s. One of these movies was the 1997 romantic comedy/drama  Picture Perfect starring Jennifer Aniston. You will love this movie if you like semi-dated romantic comedies that don’t go overboard on coherency and explore both the encroachment of work obligations and duties into the worker’s off-work time and the correspondent, compulsory blurring of work/life  boundaries for privileged contemporary American workers. I know I fall into that category! The premise goes like this. Jennifer Aniston plays 28 year-old Kate, who makes up advertising campaigns for clients at an advertising organization (like this guy, but different), and who is bit of a free spirit (no Polly exactly but certainly no quietly unhappy good girl either). Maybe a bit too much of a free spirit, according to her job! They pass her up for promotion because, as her boss tells her, they have no reason to believe she will remain loyal to the company and not suddenly one day take

girls on film\/\/world cup edition

It’s World Cup week, and since I know nothing about professional soccer, I’m cheering for the teams with the best-looking players. I’m also thinking about my own experiences as a goalie, which mostly involved racing towards people and diving at their feet. I’m not tall, so scaring the opposing team’s offense was my only hope of being useful. It totally worked for the first year. (Take heed, goalies of average height!) I also occasionally wonder at the professional players acting more like little girls than we used to when we actually were little girls. And I wonder where the women’s teams are. I worry about the choices Jess and Jules made. When Bend It Like Beckham came out in 2003, I loved it. We all loved it. Remember our first sighting of Keira Knightley? We thought she was remarkably pretty then, but by the time Pirates of the Caribbean rolled around, something was missing and we couldn’t tell what it was. Remember Parminder Nagra? After her soccer stint, she was in 129 episodes of ER, which I have never seen, but you probably have. And Jonathan Rhys Meyers! My friends who had seen him in Velvet Goldmine found him unconvincing

lay off me i’m starving\/\/mud pie

July 3, 2010

hut

Summer in Miami brings rain, thunder, heat, humidity and inevitably mud. Put those elements together and you have a great venue for two things. 1) Boogie Boarding in the flooded streets, perhaps towed by a neighbor on a bike or 2), making fresh mud pies in a palm frond hut. I highly recommend trying both this summer. (Amateurs, trust me its not the same without the hut.) Mud pies are the epitome of simple summer treats and the only real necessity is a relatively pie shaped vessel. The rest is up to you, some like a little grass and leaves I think pinworms add a pleasant touch to a fresh packed pie. As far as the effects of pinworms, an itchy hole (not your pie hole) is the only one I know of and frankly, it’s worth it. Some cultures believe mud pies are actually a potent aphrodisiac. If you ask me, that’s just dirty. But give it a try. What the hell it’s 93 but feels like 102 degrees outside what do you have to lose? Breeding ground for people and pinworms alike. Classic Mud Pie 1 large pie pan Heaps of wet mud Grass and leaves for garnish
