the avantguardian’s summer playlist!

Fire up your barbecue and drown out Mother Nature’s pleasant murmuring with this AvantGuardian summer-flavored playlist. Shut up cicadas! Shut up hoot owls! Rip the lame-ass earbuds out of your iPod and plug in some thumping speakers, sucka, because these warm days won’t last forever.

Leeds United” by Amanda Palmer

tyler re: says, declaratively: “Amanda Fucking Palmer wins by swagger alone (see her recent EP of Radiohead covers… on the ukulele) with a voice that crackles and surges—the antithesis of finely calibrated songdroids like Rihanna.  “Leeds United” is 3.5 minutes of piano-driven bombast that asks, “Who needs love when there’s Law and Order / and who needs love when there’s Southern Comfort?”  Just wait until the horn section kicks in.  Kicks your teeth in, that is, from the bicuspids to the molars.”

Horchata” by Vampire Weekend

b.c. cooper says, smilingly: “It is so hard to choose a favorite summer song, something about the sweltering heat makes me need to listen to much more music than usual. This song almost makes me want to put the top town and drive around Miami pretending it’s December. Just the thought of sipping on Horchata makes me feel chilly.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Raining Patterns” by CFCF

walter crunkite says, slurringly: “This is a great track for either zoning out or enjoying a buzz. There are no vocals and the complexity of sounds are just right for relaxing and enjoying one’s youth.”

—————————————————————————————————————

“Go Do” by Jonsi

andy reynolds says, wing-flappingly: “Jonsi, the lead singer of Sigur Ros, brings us into his strange world of fluttering emotions and ghostly vocals with his new solo work.  (And apparently he’s part bird, as if he needed to get any more interesting).  Best of all, he’s playing at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans on Halloween weekend.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Stay Close” by Delorean

kwilks says, sweatily: “Fun, rambunctious and just enough seductive techno to keep you smiling, Delorean plays with tones ranging from Passion Pit to Animal Collective. This is definitely a warm days soundtrack.”

—————————————————————————————————————

New Englandby Jonathan Richman

ari g says, penultimately: “Summer is about having fun and exploring, but it’s also about reminding yourself that your everyday world and life can be just as fun, exciting and beautiful as the majestic destinations that you read about on the travel channel (yes, you read that correctly). I wake up every morning and dance to this song, particularly in the summer.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Everybody to the Limit by Strongbad

ari g says, ultimately: “It’s the number one summer jam, all summer, every summer. Come on fhqwhgads!”

—————————————————————————————————————

Know That Feelin’” by Noot d’ Noot

paul boshears says, informatively: “I’m thinking my song for the summer is going to be ‘Know That Feelin” by Noot d’ Noot. Noot’s just finished an East Coast tour with Of Montreal, so some of you may already know that cosmic funk that Noot d’ Noot has been spraying all over Atlanta for the last year or so. Their new album, From Ever Since dropped July 23rd and it’s guaranteed to put that angle in your dangle.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Hatari” by Tune-Yards

k.o. from the k-team musik says, bumpingly: ”Will you hear the sound, ten thousand voices lost and found? This lo-fi masterpiece is a great summer song, thanks to its African-style vocals and thumpalicious beat. The solo artist behind this music project, a.k.a. my new hero Merrill Garbus, seamlessly blends smart lyrics, cheap-guitar picking, and primal wails to create some of the most sincere music I’ve heard recently. Truly a raw, fearless talent.

—————————————————————————————————————

Last One Goes the Hope” by Gogol Bordello

kathryn fidler says, obambulatingly: “There are a million reasons to love Gogol Bordello, most recently their signing on to Zack de la Rocha’s campaign to boycott Arizona. Their new album Trans-Continental hustle is the perfect summer soundtrack for your gypsy wanderings. Consider the following video-tainment.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Beautiful Day by Spider Harrison

chicken flava says, nothingly: “Just listen to the damned song. Honestly. Loud.”

—————————————————————————————————————

Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley

tyler re: says, sneakily: “Sorry, had to pip the list with one cheese-worthy track. But this is my favorite sunny-faced Marley song.  Everything’s gonna be alright, indeed.  At least I didn’t pick ‘Brown Eyed Girl’…”

Alright fans of the vanguard of the avant, until next week and our Summer Movie Marathon, satisfy yourself on these musical stylings.
